The Lamassu, an Assyrian protective deity, takes the form of a human-bull hybrid with a human head, bull's body, and bird-like wings. Originating from Sumerian times, it was initially represented by a meditating goddess associated with Ishtar in the holy center of Uruk. Placed at palace entrances facing streets, these colossal sculptures served as protective guardians. Lamassu, embodying zodiacs or constellations, found a role in safeguarding homes when engraved on clay tablets buried beneath doorways. This winged motif, dating back to Ebla around 3000 BC, became distinct in Assyria around 950 BC, symbolizing power in the Near East.
