The Ishtar Gate, erected by Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II around 575 BC, served as the eighth and primary entrance to ancient Babylon, once the world's largest city situated 53 miles south of present-day Baghdad. Standing at 38 feet tall, this magnificent gateway was adorned with vibrant blue lapis lazuli glazed bricks, featuring striking depictions of approximately 120 lions and 575 dragons/bulls. Named after the ancient goddess Ishtar/Inanna, the gate also acknowledged deities like Adad and Marduk, symbolizing Ishtar with lions, Adad with bulls, and Marduk with dragons. The infamous gate was once considered one of the original seven wonders of the ancient world.
