The Ishtar Gate, the principal entrance to ancient Babylon, once the world's largest city located 53 miles south of present-day Baghdad, stood at an impressive 38 feet tall. Built around 575 BC by Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II, it was adorned with stunning deep blue lapis lazuli glazed bricks featuring depictions of 120 lions and 575 dragons/bulls. Originally part of the seven wonders of the ancient world, it was later replaced by the Lighthouse of Alexandria in 300 BC. Dedicated to the ancient goddess Ishtar/Inanna, with mentions of Adad and Marduk, the gate's symbolism included the lion for Ishtar, bulls for Adad, and dragons representing Marduk, the national God of Babylon.
