Enki, the Sumerian god of water and knowledge, later known as EA in Akkadian, held a prominent position in the Mesopotamian pantheon alongside his father Anu and brother Enlil. The main temple, E-abzu, located in Eridu, is the earliest known Southern Iraqi temple, dating back over 6,500 years. Enki, associated with subterranean waters, is credited with creating humanity from clay in Babylonian myths. In the face of Enlil's plan to destroy humans with a flood, Enki intervened, instructing a favoured human to build an ark, echoing the biblical tale of Noah.
