The Book of the Dead, an ancient Egyptian funerary text used from around 1550 BCE to 50 BCE, was inscribed on papyrus to guide the deceased through the underworld to the afterlife. Also known as the "Book of Coming Forth by Day," it comprised magic spells compiled by priests over a millennium. Placed in the coffin or burial chamber, it continued a tradition that included the Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts, drawing on spells from as early as the 3rd millennium BCE and evolving into the Third Intermediate Period (11th to 7th centuries BCE). Spells from the Book persisted, separately inscribed on tomb walls and sarcophagi, embodying enduring Egyptian beliefs in the journey beyond life.
