The Lamassu is an Assyrian protective deity which embodies a unique fusion of a bull with a human head, a bulls body, and bird wings. Initially associated with the Sumerian Goddess Ishtar, the Lamassu later evolved to symbolize zodiacs, parent-stars, or constellations. Positioned at palace entrances, these massive sculptures stood sentinel, facing the street to ensure protection. To safeguard homes, Lamassu were engraved on clay tablets buried beneath doorways. With parallels to biblical cherubim, as described by Ezekiel, the Lamassu's originated in the Near East around 3000 BC, gaining prominence as a symbol of power in Assyria circa 950 BC.
